The Other Kind of Veggie

My job, like many of yours, I’m sure, can be extremely demanding of me: physically, emotionally, and mentally. I’m used to this, so a little planning goes a long way. The less I have to think about (what’s for breakfast/lunch/dinner? for example) really helps to keep me calm and focused.

This week, however, totally blindsided me with the crazy. I wasn’t prepared at all. Or at least I wasn’t prepared to the extent I should have been. It’s the aftermath of midterm week AND semester grades were due. I grossly underestimated the time it would take me to finish grading and entering scores. Like by hours and hours. So as a result, in my frantic scramble to get everything done in time, I made some compromises I normally don’t like to make.

  • I nommed down a big ole bowl of Chinese food. And not the sensible steamed veggies and brown rice, either. Like massive heaps of chicken lo mein. And a spring roll. And not for nothing, it absolutely filled the void in my hungry soul. In fact, I’m having the leftovers tonight and going to bed. I’ll be back to normal in the morning. And that’s okay.
  • I skimped on sleep. Disclaimer: I am a big sleeper – not a late sleeper, though. I’ll gladly get up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed at 5am… but I go to bed at like 9pm. I was in bed at (gasp!) midnight. And up at 5. Two nights in a row. Yes, I embrace my grandmotherly sleep habits. And I hate getting less than 7-8 hours per night. I’ll be in bed reeeeallll early tonight though :) Leftover lo mein is like NyQuil.
  • I didn’t work out. Save for a few brisk walks home from work. I look back at the me of Monday and think Oh how naive of her. Working out this week? Lifting and cardio? Oh silly girl, you are going to be so swamped with work you’ll want to poke your eyes out to avoid it.

So there you have my week in a nutshell. Real heavy on the work, and uhh, super low on anything else enjoyable. Que sera. Here’s what’s up for the next few days:

  • It’s Restaurant week in NYC! Husbo and I have a hot date at Fig & Olive tomorrow night; I’ll let you know how it is. Afterwards we’re meeting up with friends in Brooklyn to see a friend’s band play.
  • Saturday I’ll head back to the gym. Hopefully I’ll be trudging through snow. I’ll also do a little Farmer’s Market and meal planning action before I meet some ladies for lunch at Veselka. Rest of the day I’m relaxing and doing nothing work-related.
  • Sunday’s my Gridiron 4-miler in Central Park, then a little brunch action.

I’m really glad I made it to this point this week – and can’t even wait until 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.

What about you, any hot plans this weekend?
